Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins were introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979. The coins were initially available only in 1 oz gold with .999 fineness. This continued through 1982. In November 1982, the mint made the first of several changes and introductions within the series of gold coins for sale.
The 1982 release featured 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins for the first time, with the fineness of each coin increased to .9999 purity. In 1986, the mint then introduced a 1/2 oz gold coin. Surpassing many other gold bullion coin programs, the mint then introduced a 1/20 oz gold coin in 1993. Only one coin has been released and remained in the series since that time, the 1 Gram gold coin introduced in 2014.
Obverse features of the 2022 1/20 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin include a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in a design that serves as the fourth-generation effigy of the Queen on Canadian coinage. Developed in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, it is both the first portrait during her reign that lacks a crown and the second portrait created by a Canadian artist.
Reverse design elements on the 2022 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins feature the sugar maple leaf. This realistic depiction of the sugar maple leaf was created in 1979 by Walter Ott and has been featured across all weights and versions of the coins in the Canadian Maple Leaf Series. The background field of the obverse and reverse of these coins includes radial lines for anti-counterfeiting protection.
