The Una and the Lion Series from the Issuing Authority of St. Helena and the East India Company is one of the more prominent collections from this renewed partnership. In 1601, the East India Company was granted a Royal Charter from Queen Elizabeth I to established a trading network between the British Isles and the East Indies. From the moment of its very first voyage, East India Company ships carried a cargo of coins that had been specially struck for the trip with an effigy of Elizabeth I.
Over the years, the East India Company would establish an international trade network that would generate wealth for England and the company. It was responsible for establishing the mints and monetary system that would be used in India up until the country’s independence in 1947. It also fortified St. Helena is a waypoint for its vessels and introduced the first currency specially struck for the island.
On the obverse of 2022 1/2 Gram Proof St. Helena Gold Una and the Lion Coins is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. This effigy was created in 2015 by Jody Clark and captures the Queen at the age of 89.
The reverse side of the 2022 Proof Gold Una and the Lion Coin features Glyn Davies’ depiction of Una and the Lion. This new design for 2022 shows Una in a seated position looking to the right where the noble lion sits faithfully by her side.
