On the obverse side of 2022 Cook Islands Gold Pegasos Coins there is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In this design, we see the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This classic crown was originally a gift from Queen Mary to Elizabeth on her wedding day in 1947. Inscriptions on the obverse read Elizabeth II, 5 Dollars, Cook Islands, 2022.
The reverse side of 2022 1/2 Gram Gold Pegasos Coins features the mythological horse known as Pegasos. In this design pulled from classic Greek coinage, we see Pegasos facing left as he prepares to leap into the air. This unique offering allows you to own a classic design on a strikingly modern coin.
When the hero Perseus decapitated the Gorgon known as Medusa, her son Pegasos rose forth from her neck. An immortal winged horse, Pegasos’s entrance is both shocking and miraculous. Some say Perseus then rode away on the back of the horse. Later, Pegasos would serve the hero Bellerophon before retiring to Olympus to draw the chariot of Zeus. In addition to symbolizing poetic inspiration and immortality, Pegasos is also closely associated with water. According to the myth, the horse could produce streams of water wherever he walked. In fact, the Greek spring called Hippocrene was said to have emerged directly from the hoof Pegasos.
