Australian Kookaburra coins were introduced in 1990 by Perth Mint. The series debuted with silver bullion coins as the primary option and started a trend that saw annual bullion releases from the mint feature new reverse designs each year. In fact, the previous 32 releases prior to 2022 have all seen new designs on the reverse with no repetition of the images over the years.

Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse side of 2022 Australian Gold Kookaburra Coins. This portrait of the Queen first featured on Perth Mint coinage in 2018 following its 2016 debut on the coins of the Royal Mint of England. The design was created in July 2015 by Jody Clark, then the youngest artist to ever create a monarch portrait for British coinage. The Queen is shown at the age of 89 in this right-profile relief and she wears the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head.
A kookaburra is featured in the reverse design of the 2022 1/10 oz Gold Kookaburra Coins. The largest member of the kingfisher species, the kookaburra is synonymous with the Australian Outback as its native call sounds eerily similar to human laughter and is commonly used in audio recordings alongside footage of the Outback.
