The Proof American Platinum Eagle coin is the only version of the American Eagle from the United States Mint that features a new design element. The BU American Platinum Eagle has used the same obverse and reverse designs since the 1997 debut of the series, but the Proof Platinum Eagle has had a new reverse or obverse design each year. Coin Highlights:
From 1997 to 2017, the US Mint featured the same obverse design on the Platinum Eagles each year. This design, created by John Mercanti, captured a vision of the Statue of Liberty. It has featured on the BU version of the coin every year, but after 2017, it was replaced by a new obverse design. At the same time, the US Mint stopped changing the reverse design of the coin each year in favor of a static image of the bald eagle swooping down into the coin design. The obverse design elements from 2021-2025 will continue to change and depict the premises of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.
All of these 2021-W 1 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins are perfect specimens. The PCGS offers the coins with a PR70 grade, indicating a coin that has full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws. The included First Strike label indicates a specimen that was received for grading by the PCGS within 30 days of the initial release date for the year.
On the obverse side of 2021-W Proof American Platinum Eagles is the new design honoring the Freedom of Religion guaranteed by the First Amendment. The design shows the birth of the Liberty tree. A powerful oak, the Liberty tree is but a sapling in this design as it emerges from a small acorn on the ground.
The reverse field of 2021-W 1 oz Proof Platinum Eagle Coins includes a design that has been common to the coins each year since 2018. This image features an American bald eagle that swoops into view with its wings sweeping around its figure as it clutches an olive branch in its talons.
