The obverse of the 2021-W Proof American Gold Eagle features the Lady Liberty design from Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Created in 1907, it depicts Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer holding a torch and an olive branch.

On the reverse of 2021-W 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagles is the family of American bald eagles. Designed for this series in 1986 by Miley Busiek, the image appears for the final time in the collection. It depicts a male eagle soaring above the nest as a female eagle guards the hatchling in the nest.
