In 2021, the United States Mint celebrated the 35th anniversary of the American Gold Eagle with the release of Type 1 and Type 2 coins. These monikers helped differentiate between 2021 Gold Eagles with the original reverse design and those 2021 Gold Eagles with the new reverse design. The US Mint offered these two coin designs in so-called Designer Sets, proof two-coin collections with one coin bearing each design. Each 2021-W 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle in this 2-Coin Set comes with a near-perfect certification. Both coins have PR69 certifications that indicate coins that exhibit full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be located outside the primary focal points of the coin. These coins are also First Strike specimens, indicating the coins were received for grading by the PCGS within 30 days of release from the mint.
The 2-Coin Designer Set comes with separate 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagles. The Type 1 coin bears the original reverse design from Miley Busiek, while the Type 2 coin features the new bald eagle image from Jennie Norris.
