The United States Mint introduced an updated direction for its American Eagle silver and gold coin programs in 2021. At the midpoint of that year, both series debuted new reverse designs, creating two distinct versions of the 2021 release. As a result, collectors saw one coin with the original reverse and another featuring the updated artwork. One of the special offerings from the mint is this 2-Coin Designer Set, which includes both 2021 versions struck in reverse proof finish. In 2020, Emily Damstra’s soaring bald eagle concept was selected from a group of more than 35 proposed designs to serve as the new reverse for the Silver Eagle. Damstra brings extensive experience to the role, having worked with both the Royal Canadian Mint and the United States Mint. She also participates in the US Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program.
All 2021 Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle 2-Coin Designer Sets come with a two-coin plastic slab and a commemorative 35th-anniversary release label. PF70 coins have full, original mint luster with no detractions. Early Release coins are those received for grading within 30 days of release from the mint. Reverse proofs have mirrored design elements and frosted background fields.
The obverse of the coins in the 2021 Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle 2-Coin Designer Set showcases the Walking Liberty image. Each coin features Adolph A. Weinman’s 1916 design, first seen on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar.
On the reverse side of the 2021 Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle Designer Set coins, two different images appear. The Type 1 coin carries John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design, while the Type 2 coin displays Damstra’s new soaring eagle motif.
