The Philadelphia Mint first issued BU Silver Eagles in 1999 and 2000 during a two-year transition period in coining from the San Francisco Mint (1986-1998) to the West Point Mint (2001-present). The next batch of BU coins from the Philadelphia Mint after that two-year stint came in 2020.
As the COVID-19 pandemic raged in early 2020, the West Point Mint had to limit staffing to protect employee health while also trying to cope with intense demand for the coins. For a two-week period in April 2020, the Philadelphia Mint produced an emergency supply of American Silver Eagles to ensure demand could be met. As demand and staffing limitations continued into 2021, the Philadelphia Mint again provided emergency coining support.
The obverse side of 2021 (P) 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins features the image of Lady Liberty. Known as Walking Liberty, the design was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman. It features a left-profile image of Liberty as she walks toward the sun rising over a mountain on the horizon. She carries the branches of oak and laurel in her left hand and has the American flag draped around her figure.
On the reverse face of the 2021 (P) American Silver Eagle Coin is a depiction of the heraldic eagle. The final time it will feature on the coins, the heraldic eagle offers a front-facing bald eagle supporting the US national shield.
These 2021 (P) 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins are perfect specimens with a distinctive First Day of Issue label. Mint State 70 specimens showcase full, original mint luster and have no detracting flaws. The FDOI label means the coins were received for grading within 24 hours of the mint’s initial release.
