The American Silver Eagle is the world’s best-selling silver coin. To meet ongoing demand for these coins, the United States Mint has, at times, relied on facilities beyond the West Point Mint to ensure a steady supply of Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Eagles for investors. In 2020, a combination of staffing challenges, operational disruptions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, and heightened investor demand led the Philadelphia Mint to assist with emergency production, a factor that carried over into 2021 as well. Right now, certified 2021 (P) 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins with special Bell Labels in the slab are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2021 (P) 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coin available here is packaged in a protective slab and comes with a special Liberty Bell label, recognizing its production at the main US Mint branch at the Philadelphia Mint. MS70 coins exhibit full, original mint luster and have no visible detractions. First Day of Issue coins are those received for certification within 24 hours of release from the mint.
2021 was not the first time the Philadelphia Mint released BU Silver Eagles. In 1999 and 2000, the Philadelphia Mint struck Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Eagles on behalf of the United States Mint. Beginning in 2001, the West Point Mint assumed primary responsibility for producing all versions of the American Eagle coins. When demand rises above the available production capacity at West Point, other mint facilities step in to help strike Brilliant Uncirculated Silver Eagles. During both 2020 and 2021, the Philadelphia Mint produced emergency issues of the coin to help maintain adequate supply levels for the market.
On the obverse of the 2021 (P) Silver Eagle Coin is the well-known Walking Liberty design. Created by Adolph A. Weinman, the image presents Liberty in left-profile relief as she moves across the landscape toward a rising sun positioned above a mountain ridge. Her right hand extends outward in the direction of the sun, while her left arm carries branches of oak and laurel. As she strides forward, the American flag is draped around her shoulders, adding a patriotic element to the composition.
The reverse side of the 2021 (P) 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coin features the heraldic eagle design. Originally developed in 1794 by Robert Scot, this interpretation of the heraldic eagle was updated in 1986 by John Mercanti for use on the Silver Eagle series. The design shows an eagle positioned behind the United States national shield, holding the arrows of war in one talon and the olive branch of peace in the other.
