Founded in 1838, the New Orleans Mint was one of the first branch mints of the United States Mint. From its founding in 1792 until 1835, the only mint facility in the US Mint system was the main branch at Philadelphia. In 1835, Congress approved the construction of three new branch mints. The first to open was the Charlotte Mint, followed by the Dahlonega Mint.
Just a few months after the Dahlonega Mint opened in Georgia, the US Mint system gained its southernmost branch mint when the New Orleans Mint opened in 1838. Over the course of its life, the New Orleans Mint would issue coins of nearly every denomination for the US, totalling some 427 million gold and silver coins. Among these coins were the Morgan Silver Dollars.
Lady Liberty is found on the obverse of all 2021 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins. This design from George T. Morgan was created in 1878 with the help of Anna Willess Williams. She sat as Morgan’s model for the image of Liberty through at least four portrait sessions.
The heraldic eagle of the United States is found on the reverse side of the 2021 O Privy Morgan Silver Dollar. This image shows the front-facing eagle as it clutches the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. These modern silver bullion versions of the Morgan Dollar were struck at the Philadelphia Mint with an honorary O privy mark to celebrate the role of the New Orleans Mint in the production of Morgan Silver Dollars.
These 2021 O Privy Morgan Silver Dollar Coins are available to purchase in PCGS plastic slabs with a perfect certification. Mint State 70 coins showcase full, original mint luster and bear no detracting flaws. The First Day of Issue label indicates the coins were received for grading within 24 hours of release from the mint.
