The modern Great Britain Gold Sovereign can trace its roots all the way back to the rise of the House of Tudor. During the reign of King Henry VII, the first monarch of the House of Tudor, the English gold sovereign was introduced with an effigy of the king on the obverse and varying images with Christian themes on the reverse. When Queen Elizabeth I died childless and the House of Tudor came to an end, King James I of England suspended production of the English sovereign. Two centuries later, the House of Hanover revived the sovereign during the reign of King George III.
On the obverse of the modern 2021 Great Britain Gold Sovereign is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty has featured on the Gold Sovereign since 1952 and this is the fifth-generation portrait of the Queen to be used in the series. Designed by Jody Clark, this portrait shows the Queen aged 89 with the George IV State Diadem Crown.
The reverse side of 2021 Great Britain Gold Sovereign coins includes a depiction of St. George on horseback as he slays a dragon. There are various versions of stories about a Christian warrior on a horse slaying a serpent-like beast that date back to the late Roman era and the early 5th century. In this design from Benedetto Pistrucci, a muscular St. George rides in on horseback with a Corinthian helmet on his head and a sword in his right hand as he rides down the dragon before slaying the beast with his sword.
