“Five Tiger Generals” is an old Chinese military term referring to the elite generals serving a lord. One of the most famous such groups is the Five Tiger Generals of the state of Shu Han in the Three Kingdoms period, legendary heroes who fought for the great warlord Liu Bei. Among them was Zhang Fei, described in the Romance as a giant of a man, short-tempered but loyal, mighty, and virtuous beyond measure, wielding a spear almost ten feet long.
The 2021 Black Proof Niue Silver Five Tiger Generals Zhang Fei Coin is an extraordinary work of medallic art with high-relief engravings brought out beautifully by a lustrous black proof finish. It provides three full ounces of pure silver and comes in an elegant printed sleeve inside a luxurious wooden presentation box, along with a Certificate of Authenticity.
The coin’s obverse bears a broad border of traditional Chinese stylized designs with a legal tender effigy of Queen Elizabeth II at the center. Gilded renditions of Zhang Fei’s mighty spear are crossed above, along with the inscriptions “Elizabeth II,” “Niue,” “Five Dollars,” and “2021.”
The reverse side shows a vivid high-relief portrait of Zhang Fei riding a rampant steed, with a pagoda and bridge in the background. He’s accompanied by the inscriptions “Five Generals,” “Zhang Fei,” along with his name in Chinese characters, surrounded by a detailed border.
