The Animal Portrait Series debuted in 2017 at the Royal Canadian Mint. The series offers one design per year issued on gold and silver coins for sale. Each of the reverse-proof coins comes in 1/4 oz gold and 3/4 oz silver. The designs in the series have all been designed by Denis Mayer Jr.
In the release of the 2021-dated coin, the Royal Canadian Mint sends the series into the air for the first time. The first four designs were all focused on land mammals with the collection debuting with the Bighorn Sheep. This was followed by the Wolverine, Mustang, and Woodland Caribou.
Queen Elizabeth II is found on the obverse side of 2021 3/4 oz Canadian Silver Great Horned Owl Reverse Proof Coins. Her Majesty has featured on Canadian coins throughout her reign, with this design representing the fourth-generation design. Created in 2003, it is just the second design from a Canadian artist and is the first effigy of her reign to lack a crown on the head of the monarch.
A Great Horned Owl features on the reverse of 2021 Canadian Silver Animal Portrait Series Reverse Proof coins. This depiction of the Great Horned Owl showcases the sharp gaze and keen eye of the aerial predator. Great Horned Owls are also known as tiger owls or hoot owls, with early naturalists even referring to the birds as the tigers of the air. The name likely comes from the stalking of the Great Horned Owl when it hunts and the color pattern that some of the owls have in their plumage, one that is similar to that of the pattern of a tiger’s fur. This side of the coin features the RCM’s micro-laser engraved maple leaf privy mark that bears a “21” at the center. These digits are only visible under magnification.
These 2021 3/4 oz Canadian Silver Great Horned Owl Reverse Proof Coins are available for individual purchase or bulk purchase. Individual coins come in plastic flips, multiples of 30 come in tubes, and multiples of 600 come in boxes. The box holds a total of 20 individual tubes. These reverse proofs have mirrored designs and frosted design elements.
