St. Helena was one of the most important strategic locations supporting the international trade routes of the East India Company. The company was founded to facilitate trade in the East Indies to satisfy the demands of Britons in England for basic commodities from the East Indies, including cotton, silver, indigo dye, salt, and spices, among other things. Vessels sailing back to England from the East Indies would use St. Helena as a gathering point to wait for all of the vessels from a particular voyage to reconnect before heading to home ports in London and beyond within England.
On the obverse side of 2021 250 Gram St. Helena Rectangular Silver East India Company Coins, you will find a historic right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. In this design from Raphael Maklouf, the Queen is shown in a design created in 1985 that shows the Queen wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. The Queen’s portrait is captured inside of an oval that is crowned by the Imperial State Crown. There are inscriptions of the face value, date, nation of issue, weight, purity, and metal content of the coin.
The reverse field of the 2021 St. Helena Rectangular Silver East India Company Coins includes a depiction of an East India Company sailing vessel. The East India Company owned some of the greatest sailing vessels of the 17th and 18th centuries, and the design element shows one of their powerful vessels traversing the ocean.
