He acted tame to draw her trust, and she eventually climbed on his back, whereupon he ran off and swam across the sea to Crete. According to the story, Europa later married a king and became the queen of Crete. The continent of Europe is named after her.
The reverse of the coin depicts the requisite effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The right-facing portrait was created by Ian Rank-Broadley for the UK Royal Mint in 1998. It was used officially on UK coinage through 2015. It’s one of the most-used effigies of the queen and is still used in many mintings across the globe where nations must include the queen’s image. The effigy is encircled by inscriptions that spell out the queen’s name, name of the minting government, the denomination of the coin, and the year of minting.
