The Rwandan Wildlife African Ounce Series debuted from the BH Mayer Mint in 2008. The collection offers a reverse field that comes with a slight change each year. While there is a common design in place on the reverse each year that does not change, the lower-left field does come with a new image of a wildlife family. The changing design of native species always features at least two members of said species, typically a mother and child. The common element is that of a topographic map of Africa.
Obverse design elements of the 2021 1 oz Rwandan Okapi Silver Coins depict the national coat of arms. The national seal of the Republic of Rwanda features a traditional woven basket in the center with a sun above. There are plants of coffee and sorghum on either side of the basket, with a cogwheel below. These design elements are flanked by traditional warrior shields and the entire design is encircled by rope.
Reverse features of the 2021 Rwandan Okapi Silver Coin include the topographic map of Africa with a depiction of an okapi family. The okapi goes by many nicknames due to its similarity to two other native African species. Inhabiting a small region of the Democratic Republic of Congo in central Africa, the okapi is often called the forest giraffe, Congolese giraffe, or the zebra giraffe. While the latter term is an inaccurate comparison to the zebra based on the stripes on the back and legs of the okapi, the former terms are more accurate. The okapi is, in fact, closely related to the giraffe and is one of only two living members of the family Giraffidae along with the giraffe.
