The East India Company’s “Queen’s Virtues” series celebrates the allegorical personifications of six virtues attributed to the English monarch, using their portrayal on the Victoria Monument outside Buckingham Palace as a source of inspiration. Queen Victoria was the first monarch to be explicitly identified with these virtues: Justice, Truth, and Charity form her monument’s base, with the allegorical figures of Courage and Constancy above them. At the apex stands the Winged Angel of Victory, the subject of the first coin in this magnificent series, the 2021 1 oz Proof St. Helena Silver Queen’s Virtues Victory Coin.

Victory in ancient Roman religion was the counterpart of the Greek goddess Nike, the personification of victory. Whereas the Greek version represented victory in competitions of all kinds such as chariot races, Victoria represented a triumph over death and victory in battle. As celebrated on the monument of her namesake English Queen, Victory also represents the celebration of peace’s return: for the Queen is the Sovereign Head of the Armed Forces and still possesses the right to declare war or an end to a conflict. This remains one of the Queen’s signal “virtues” down to the present day and the reign of Elizabeth II.

A high-relief engraving of Winged Victory dominates the coin’s reverse side, brilliantly gilded and carrying a victor’s palm. She’s surrounded by the inscriptions “VICTORIA,” “CONCORDIA” and “CRESCIT,” meaning “Victory Through Harmony.”
