In 1670, the States-General and Parliament of the Dutch Republic issued a decree that a new silver coin would take the place of existing inferior coins in circulation. This led to the creation of the Scheepjesschelling, which was a variation on the common Dutch Schelling. It gets its name because it features a ship in the design, and the Dutch word for ship is scheepje. The reason that the ship was chosen for the coin’s design was that this silver piece was to be used primarily for trading purposes.
On the obverse of 2021 Proof Netherlands Ship Shilling Silver Coins, there is a beautiful depiction of a warship. Inscribed along the edges are the words Concordia Res Parvae Crescunt. This translates in English as Unity Makes Strength.
