The largest coin available in the Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Series is the 1 oz gold coin. Unlike other programs, the 1 oz gold coin was not the first one offered in this series. In fact, the 1 oz Proof Gold Libertad wasn’t even the second weight offered in the series, but rather, was the third to debut and did so alongside two other new weights in the collection in 2005. The very first Proof Mexican Gold Libertad issued by the Mexican Mint was a one-time issue in 1989. This 1/2 oz gold coin had a mintage just over 700 coins in total and marked the only Proof Mexican Gold Libertad available for the next two decades. In 2004, a 1/4 oz Proof Gold Libertad was issued, and this coin instigated annual coining that started in earnest the next year in 2005. This year saw the return of the 1/2 oz gold coin, as well as the introduction of the 1 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz gold coins.
All of these 2021 1 oz Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coins are available to purchase individually in acrylic capsules. Coins in this listing are proof specimens that have frosted design elements that contrast the mirrored background fields of the coin.
On the obverse of 2021 Proof Mexican Gold Libertad Coins is an image of Winged Victory. This statue is based on the ancient goddess of victory known as Victoria. In this design, she is a winged figure holding a laurel wreath in her right hand, a symbol of victory, with a set of broken chains in her left hand, a symbol of freedom from oppression. This statue currently sits atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column in Mexico City.
The reverse side of the 2021 1 oz Proof Gold Libertad features the modern Mexican coat of arms. The national seal features a golden eagle in left-profile relief with raised wings as it uses its beak and talons to battle a serpent. This all takes place on the branch of a prickly pear cactus with an oak-and-laurel wreath beneath the design element.
