Gibraltar coin releases from the Scottsdale Mint have featured epic scenes of history, and this coin is no exception. The imagery of the coin’s design tells the story of Greek hero and monster slayer Perseus, who severed the head of Medusa in order to save another Greek figure, Andromeda, from a vicious sea monster. Perseus is also famous for being another son of Zeus, as well as the great-grandfather and half-brother of Hercules (they were both sired by Zeus).
The Gibraltar Coat of Arms is seen on the obverse of this unique coin. Three nations of the United Kingdom—England, Ireland, and Scotland—are represented on this coin with special imagery for each nation featured on the Coat of Arms. The coin’s weight, purity, and value are all listed on the obverse, along with the coin’s release year. “GIBRALTAR” is printed at the top of the obverse as the nation where this coin is considered a legal tender.
On the reverse of the 2021 1 oz Gibraltar Silver Medusa’s Head Coin BU is the image of Perseus holding the severed head of Medusa. Behind Perseus is the sculptor Benvenuto Cellini, who designed the statue of Perseus, which can be seen in person at the Piazza della Signoria in Italy. This sculpture is considered one of Cellini’s best works.
