On the obverse side of the 2021 Colorized EC8 Silver Montserrat Coin is the Queen Elizabeth II effigy. This portrait comes courtesy of artist Ian Rank-Broadley, who designed it in 1998. Her Majesty is depicted here in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. For the design, Broadley drew inspiration from Bendetto Pistrucci’s famous 1817 portrait of George III.
The reverse field of 2021 1 oz Colorized EC8 Silver Montserrat Coins features a Blue Girdled Angelfish swimming in the ocean. Popular to the region, this fish is seen here in exquisite color, which lends it an almost lifelike quality. The words Montserrat 2021 are inscribed along the rim.
While the pear-shaped island of Montserrat is known to many as a beach getaway, this location has its own rich culture and history as well. Discovered by Columbus in 1593, Montserrat today sees a variety of European, North American, and African cultural influences play out across its land. One of the island’s lesser-known facts is that it once was home to a recording studio for famous musicians, including Elton John, Paul McCartney, and the Rolling Stones. Unfortunately, the studio was destroyed in the late 1980s by a hurricane.
