The 2021 American Silver Eagle release from the United States Mint is the first in the four-decade history of the collection to feature a new design element. Since 1986, the coins have been issued each year with the same design elements on the obverse and reverse fields. The coins are in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and feature colorization completed by a third-party dealer. The US Mint has only recently taken to producing its own colorized coins, and to-date has used it only for commemorative coining.
The 2021 release of American Silver Eagles is the most unique from the US Mint to date. A new design from Emily Damstra is set to feature on the reverse. This new artwork will show the American bald eagle in flight as it returns to its unseen nest with a large oak branch in its talons. The design is meant to capture the fortitude and persistence of the bald eagle. The US Mint will issue two versions of the 2021 Silver Eagle, with early issues featuring the heraldic eagle and later releases after mid-2021 using the new design.
Walking Liberty is found on the obverse side of 2021 1 oz Colorized American Silver Eagle Coin. This design was originally created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman and depicts Liberty in left-profile relief as she walks toward the sun on the horizon. The image show Liberty with the American flag draped around her figure as she walks with her right hand outstretched and her left carrying branches of oak and laurel. The colorized visuals appear on this field of the coin, with the red, white, and blue of the American flag the most prominent.
For the final time, the heraldic eagle of the United States features on the reverse side of 2021 Colorized American Silver Eagle Coins. This version of the design was modernized in 1986 for this series by John Mercanti. It depicts the American bald eagle with the US national shield on its chest, the arrows of war in one talon, and the olive branch of peace in the other.
