The Australian Silver Wombat is the latest native-species release from the Perth Mint. It joins long-running programs like the Australian Silver Kookaburra and Australian Silver Koala, as well as more recently introduced programs like the Australian Silver Kangaroo, Australian Silver Wedge Tail Eagle, and the Australian Silver Emu.
The obverse side of the new 2021 Australian Silver Wombat Coin features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the sixth portrait of the Queen to feature on Australian coins and the first one since 1966 to include more of her neckline and her shoulders. The design comes from Jody Clark and was originally created for the Royal Mint in 2015. It captures the Queen at the age of 89 and shows her wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown.
On the reverse face of 2021 1 oz Silver Wombat Coins is a depiction of the small, muscular marsupial. The wombat becomes the third marsupial to feature on a major silver bullion series from the Perth Mint behind the Koala and the Kangaroo collections. The wombat is a quadrupedal marsupial that can weigh as much as 72 lbs and is classified into three distinct subspecies.
Founded in 1899, the Perth Mint is the oldest operating mint in the nation. It was originally opened as a Royal Mint branch facility, but is now owned by the state of Western Australia. Its coins are legal tender in Australia under the Currency Act of 1965.
