This unique coin design pays tribute to the mythological story of Perseus, who was a Greek hero and a son of Zeus. To save Andromeda from a fierce sea monster, Perseus severed Medusa’s head. Because he was also sired by Zeus, Perseus is both the great-grandfather and half-brother to Hercules.
On the obverse of the 2021 1 oz Antique Gibraltar Silver Medusa’s Head Coin is the Gibraltar Coat of Arms. Three nations of the United Kingdom are represented through the symbolism on this Coat of Arms: Scotland, Ireland, and England. The Coat of Arms features images of a lion in a crown and a unicorn. The obverse also shows the coin’s purity, weight, and value, along with its release year and the place of origin, “GIBRALTAR”.
