To mark the 35th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle series, the United States Mint released two separate versions of the coin. The Type 1 coins retained the original reverse by John Mercanti, while the Type 2 coins introduced a new reverse design from Emily Damstra. At the same time, the Mint implemented updated designs across both the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle collections. Right now, certified 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coin available here comes in perfect condition with a Mint State 70 certification. MS70 coins exhibit full, original mint luster and have no visible detracting flaws. This coin includes the PCGS Blue Label, a common label often used on MS70 and MS69 coins.
The 2021 Silver Eagle release stands as the most unique in program history. It not only marked a transition from the original reverse design to a new bald eagle-themed reverse, but it also marked the first dual release in program history, with the first half of the year seeing coins struck with the original reverse design, before the new design was put into circulation the same year, starting around July 2021.
The obverse of the 2021 American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coins continues to feature the Walking Liberty image. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916, the artwork first appeared on the United States Mint’s half-dollar. Liberty is depicted in left-profile relief, moving toward the sun as it rises along the horizon. Included on this updated obverse is the addition of Weinman’s “AW” initials, positioned in the lower-right portion of the design.
For the reverse of the 2021 1 oz Silver Eagle Type 2 Coins, Emily Damstra created a new image of a bald eagle in flight. The United States Mint considered more than 30 possible reverse designs before selecting this final concept. The new eagle design replaced the long-running reverse by John Mercanti, which had been in use since 1986.
