The United States Mint recognized the 35th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle in 2021 by issuing two different versions of the coin. Type 1 coins continued with the established reverse designed by John Mercanti, while Type 2 coins introduced a new reverse from Emily Damstra. During this anniversary year, the Mint also developed updated designs for both the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle series. Today, 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins in certified condition are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
2021 marked the first-ever change in design to the American Silver Eagle, as well as the first-ever dual release schedule. From the start of production until roughly June 2021, the US Mint produced Silver Eagles with John Mercanti’s original reverse design. After about a two-week pause in production, coining resumed just before July 2021 with the new reverse design from Emily Damstra.
All 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins listed here come in Mint State 70 condition. MS70 coins have full, original mint luster and no visible detractions. The PCGS Blue Label is typically used in the slab for MS70 and MS69 coins only. First Strike specimens are those received for grading within 30 days of release from the mint.
The obverse design on the 2021 American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coins features the enduring Walking Liberty motif. Created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916, this design was first used on the United States Mint’s half-dollar coin. Liberty appears in left-profile relief, striding toward the rising sun along the horizon. As part of the updated design elements, Weinman’s “AW” initials now appear in the lower-right field of the obverse.
On the reverse side of the 2021 1 oz Silver Eagle Type 2 Coins is a bald eagle in flight, designed by Emily Damstra. The United States Mint evaluated more than 30 proposed designs before selecting this image. It replaced the previous reverse by John Mercanti, which had been featured on the coin since its introduction in 1986.
