In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle, the United States Mint introduced two distinct versions of the coin in 2021. The Type 1 coin continued to feature the familiar reverse design created by John Mercanti, while the Type 2 coin showcased a new reverse created by Emily Damstra. Alongside this change, the United States Mint also updated the designs for both the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle programs. Now, certified 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins are available online at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 2021 American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coins displays the long-standing Walking Liberty design. This artwork by Adolph A. Weinman was first introduced in 1916 on the half-dollar issued by the United States Mint. The design presents Liberty in left-profile relief as she walks toward the rising sun on the horizon. A new addition to the obverse is Weinman’s “AW” initials, now visible in the lower-right field.
On the reverse of the 2021 1 oz Silver Eagle Type 2 Coins is a design created by Emily Damstra. The Mint reviewed more than 30 potential designs before selecting this depiction of a bald eagle in mid-flight. This image replaced the heraldic eagle design by John Mercanti that had appeared on the coin since its debut in 1986.
The US Mint’s 2021 celebration of the American Eagle program’s 35th anniversary included the launch of new designs on the reverse of both the Silver Eagle and the Gold Eagle. Both coins started the production cycle in 2021 with their respective original designs, before a brief production pause in June to accommodate the changeover to new design dies.
These 2021 1o z American Silver Eagle Coins come in a plastic slab with a unique West Point Core, a larger label design that celebrates West Point’s history. Mint State 70 coins showcase full, original mint luster with no visible flaws. First Day of Issue coins are those that are received for grading within 24 hours of release from the mint.
