Coin Highlights:
The United States Mint whittled down a list of 35-plus possible designs for the new bald eagle design on the reverse of its American Silver Eagle to just one. Emily Damstra’s winning submission brings the bald eagle to life in a realistic depiction to replace the heraldic eagle from John Mercanti that graced the coins from 1986 to early 2021.
As the US Mint was not ready in late 2020 with dies to strike the new reverse designs, production started with 2021-dated coins using the original design combination. With the design now ready, you can differentiate between 2021 coins with the old design combinations and 2021 coins with the new design combinations by looking for the Type 1 and Type 2 monikers.
Walking Liberty features on the obverse of 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coins. This design was originally found on the US half dollar from 1916 to 1947 and was created by Adolph A. Weinman. With the Type 2 release, the US Mint offers an enhanced field with Weinman’s “AW” signature mark now included just as it was in 1916.
A new depiction of the American bald eagle in flight is found in the reverse design of the 2021 American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coin. This design shows off the power and majesty of the bird as it swoops down into view clutching an oak branch in its talons.
These 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coins come with a Mint State 69 certification. Coins in this condition showcase full, original mint luster and have no more than two minor detracting flaws. These flaws must be outside of the primary focal points and are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines only. To qualify for the Early Release designation, these coins had to arrive at the NGC within 30 days of the original release date.
