With the release of the 2021-dated Gold Eagle Type 2 coins, Miley Busiek’s design of the family of bald eagles is retired from the reverse of the coins. That original design was exclusive to the Gold Eagle Series from its launch in 1986 and featured on all three versions of the coin across all four available weights.
Stepping to the forefront now is a new design from Jennie Norris. Ms. Norris is a graphic artist and works at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Her design was chosen from more than 30 submissions to be the new face of the bald eagle on the American Gold Eagle bullion coins.
The obverse of 2021 1 oz American Gold Eagles features the iconic Lady Liberty design. Created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, this modern design helped launch a revolution in American coin imagery in the early 20th century. The 2021 Type 2 release enhances the visual impact of the stars, torch, U.S. Capitol Building, and sun rays on this side in a manner consistent with Saint-Gaudens’ original vision for the image back in 1907.
On the reverse of the 2021 American Gold Eagle Type 2 Coin is a depiction of the American bald eagle. This left-profile portrait of the eagle’s head captures all of its physical features in great detail. Most notably, it brings exceptional detail to the plumage of the bird. The coins in the Type 2 release now boast a variation element in the reeded edge design that provides anti-counterfeiting measures for the series.
These 2021 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coins are available in Mint State 69 condition. Coins in this condition showcase full, original mint luster, but also have a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. These flaws are limited in scope to the areas outside of the primary focal field and limited in nature to minuscule contact marks or hairlines only. As First Day of Issue coins, each of these arrived at the NGC within 24 hours of the US Mint’s release.
