South Africa’s Gold Krugerrand Series debuted in 1967 as a private vehicle for gold ownership. The series featured only a 1 oz gold coin through its first 13 years of availability. As of 1980, fractional-ounce options have been available annually in the series to offer an opportunity for more gold investors to get involved in gold ownership through the Krugerrand.

The Krugerrand’s introduction in 1967 preceded a massive bull market for gold in the 1970s. As the only gold bullion coin available to investors during this bull market, millions of South African Gold Krugerrands were sold in the 1970s and into the 1980s. The United States was the biggest market for the Krugerrand at this time, with an estimated 22 million coins sold in the US between 1974 and the implementation of an economic ban on imports of Krugerrands to the US in 1985.
The obverse face of the 2021 South African Gold Krugerrand Coin features Paul Kruger, the former President of the South African Republic. Kruger is still considered an influential historical figure in South Africa, so much so that his name was used to create the name of this coin series. The name Krugerrand comes from a combination of Kruger’s last name with the new national denomination, the Rand.
On the reverse side of 2021 1/4 oz South African Gold Krugerrand coins, you will find the Springbok antelope. This species is native to the plains of southern Africa to include the territory of the modern-day Republic of South Africa.
The South African Krugerrands are produced through a partnership between the Rand Refinery and South African Mint. The Rand Refinery produces the gold bullion blanks used in production of the Krugerrand and markets the coins to investors around the globe, while the South African Mint uses its Krugerrand dies to strike the blanks and produce the finished Krugerrand coins.
