In 1991, the Mexican Mint expanded the options in the series to offer fractional-ounce coins for the first time. In that year, these 1/4 oz silver coins were released for the first time along with 1/2 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz silver coins. The demand for the fractional-ounce coins has often been close among the four options in most years, but there have been exceptions in years of high demand when the 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz silver coins far outpaced the 1/4 oz and 1/2 oz silver coins.
The highest mintages recorded to date in the 1/4 oz Silver Libertad came early on between 1992 and 1994. The 1992 coin has the highest mintage at 104,000, with 90,000 coins sold in each of the 1993 and 1994 releases. Recent years have seen wild swings from 8,100 coins in 2017 to 18,000 in 2018, and back down to 5,450 in 2019.
On the obverse face of 2021 1/4 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coins is the national coat of arms for Mexico. The modern coat of arms depicts a golden eagle on a prickly pear cactus as it battles with a serpent. Historically, the seal is etched in the lore of Aztec mythology around the founding of Tenochtitlan, modern-day Mexico City. It is said the god Huitzilopochtli told the Aztecs to build the city on a spot where they witnessed an eagle devouring a snake on a cactus.
The reverse field of 2021 Mexican Silver Libertad Coins comes with an image of Winged Victory. The statue was built in 1910 using copper to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of Mexico’s revolution against Spain in 1810.
