When the Mexican Mint introduced the new Mexican Gold Libertad bullion coins in 1981, just three coin weights were offered. These three weights included 1 oz gold, 1/2 oz gold, and these 1/4 oz gold coins as the smallest coins, at the time. In the modern era, the Mexican Gold Libertad offers these three original weights alongside 1/10 oz and 1/20 oz gold coins. Right now, 2021 1/4 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.

The 1/4 oz Gold Libertad Coin has the second-highest mintage in the history of the Mexican Gold Libertad Series. The three highest mintages all came in 1981 when the Mexican Mint debuted the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1/4 oz gold coins for the first time. With 313,000 gold coins sold in the 1/4 oz Gold Libertad weight that year, the coin has the distinction of being the second-highest minted in the series. Like its counterpart fractional-ounce weights in the series, the decade of 2010-2020 saw much lower mintages on average in the series. The 1/4 oz Gold Libertad did not surpass 1,500 coins in any given year during this decade.
The obverse side of 2021 1/4 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coins features the Mexican coat of arms. The national seal is based on an ancient Aztec tale and the imagery from the Codex Mendoza, an ancient Aztec codex. The tale upon which the seal is based tells of the Aztecs being advised by a god that they should found the city of Tenochtitlan at the site where they saw a golden eagle devouring a rattlesnake.
On the reverse face of 2021 Mexican Gold Libertad Coins is the image of Winged Victory. In this design, Victory is shown in a three-quarter side profile as she is present atop the Mexican Independence Victory Column. With wings on her back, she reaches out with her right hand holding a wreath crown and clutches broken chains in her left hand. The mountains of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl are visible in the distant background, with the former on the right and the latter on the left.
