Since 1986, the United States Mint has issued the American Gold Eagle Coins with the same two design elements. Lady Liberty as created in 1907 is featured on the obverse of the coins, while a unique depiction of the American bald eagle family is found on the reverse. As the US Mint celebrates the 35th anniversary of the popular gold bullion series, a new reverse design element is slated to feature on the coins at some point in 2021.
Coin Highlights:
The United States Mint is prepared to introduce new bald eagle designs to the reverse of the 2021 American Gold Eagles, but the final design has not been selected nor a die made in time for the introductory coining of 2021 American Gold Eagles. As the US Mint is legislatively committed to producing Gold Eagles to meet demand and must issue its 2021 coins on time, the existing historic design is going to feature first.
By mid-2021, the US Mint will be ready with the new reverse design and will begin striking more 2021 American Gold Eagles in all weights, but with the new design. This makes the 2021 Gold Eagle the first coin ever in the series to feature two different designs in one year.
The obverse side of the 2021 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coins features a depiction of Lady Liberty. Her figure is shown in front-facing relief with a large torch in her right hand to light the way and an olive branch in her left denoting a desire for peace in the future. This design was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and originally used on the $20 Double Gold Eagle coin.
On the reverse face of 2021 American Gold Eagle Coins is the family of American bald eagles. Designed by Miley Busiek in 1986 and exclusive to this series, the family of bald eagles includes a male eagle in flight over the nest with a female eagle sheltering a young hatchling in the nest.
These 2021 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coins are available to purchase individually or in multiples. Individual coins come in plastic flips, with multiples of 40 inside acrylic tubes. All of the coins are available in Brilliant Uncirculated condition.
