In 2021, the United States Mint introduced a brand-new design element on the American Gold Eagle coins for the first time in the history of the program. The new design on the reverse of the coins debuted in July 2021 and marked a transition from the original image to a new design on the 35th anniversary of the series. American Gold Eagle coins debuted in 1986 at the United States Mint. The coins of the American Gold Eagle Series were the purest coins the US Mint had issued since 1834, the last time a 22-karat gold coin was issued. These modern 22-karat gold coins from the US Mint have 91.67% gold content, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver.

On the obverse of 2021 1/4 oz Gold Eagles is an effigy of Lady Liberty. This historic depiction of Liberty was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and featured on the $20 Gold Double Eagle until 1933. This portrait shows the full-length figure of Liberty walking toward you in front-facing relief. She holds up a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The field includes the U.S. Capitol Building in the background field, sun rays on the horizon behind her figure, and a ring of 50 stars around the design element.
The reverse side of the 2021 American Gold Eagle comes with a new depiction of the American bald eagle. This design was created by Jennie Norris and chosen from more than 30 possible designs to be the new reverse image on the Gold Eagles. The image shown here captures the bald eagle in left-profile relief with only its head captured in the design.
