The Australian Gold Kangaroo Series from the Perth Mint dates back to 1986 when it debuted as the Australian Gold Nugget. From 1989 to the present, the series has been available from the mint as the Gold Kangaroo. In 2010, a 1/2 Gram coin was added to the series that is lovingly referred to as the Mini Roo. This diminutive coin is a great, affordable option for buying gold when prices soar. Right now, 2021 1/2 Gram Australian Gold Mini Roo Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.

The Australian Kangaroo Series from the Perth Mint is the oldest gold bullion series at the mint. As mentioned above, it started out as a different series before abandoning that design approach for this wildlife-themed focus in 1989. The popularity of the switch led the Perth Mint to introduce several silver bullion coin collections with wildlife themes in the years to come, including the Kookaburra in 1990, Koala in 2007, and the Kangaroo in 2016.
The obverse side of 2021 1/2 Gram Australian Gold Mini Roo Coins features a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the sixth-generation design to feature on Australian coins and is an adaptation of Jody Clark’s 2015 design for the Royal Mint of England. Mr. Clark’s design features the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. Notably, this is the first portrait of the Queen on an Australian coin since 1966 to include her shoulders and neckline in the design.
On the reverse field of the 2021 Australian Gold Mini Roo Coin is a depiction of a small kangaroo. Just like the larger options in the 2021 release, the kangaroo is resting on its hind legs as its arms dangle down toward the ground. The kangaroo appears hunched over and at rest in this left-profile image of the marsupial.
Founded in 1899, the Perth Mint was intended to serve as a Royal Mint of England branch facility in Australia, joining the Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint. Australia’s federation movement in 1902 changed the mint’s path forward and today it is the oldest operating mint in the country, outlasting both the Sydney Mint and Melbourne Mint as an active facility.
