When the United States Mint first returned to striking Proof American Silver Eagles at the San Francisco Mint in 2011, the purpose was celebratory in nature. Those coins were issued as part of the 25th-anniversary set of Silver Eagles the US Mint issued that year. The next year, in 2012, Proof Silver Eagles were again struck at the San Francisco Mint. This time, the purpose was to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the current San Francisco Mint facility.
Since 2018, however, the S-Proof Silver Eagles produced at the San Francisco Mint have been a supplemental option to the traditional W-Proof Silver Eagle from the West Point Mint. Small batches of each have been struck each year, with the only difference between the two being the mint marks that appear on the reverse field.
Walking Liberty features on the obverse of all 2020-S 1 oz Proof American Silver Eagle Coins. This iconic design from Adolph A. Weinman shows Liberty walking in left-profile relief with her right hand outstretched and her left hand carrying branches of oak and laurel. She is walking toward the sun on the horizon in this design.
The heraldic eagle is found in the reverse field of 2020-S 1 oz Proof Silver Eagles. This design was modernized in 1986 by John Mercanti for the debut of the American Silver Eagle. It depicts a powerful bald eagle supporting the US national shield. These 2020-S Proof Silver Eagles are the last ones in the series to be struck at the San Francisco Mint with the heraldic eagle design on the reverse. A new design will come to the reverse in 2021 and the San Francisco Mint will not issue a 2021-dated Proof Silver Eagle with the heraldic eagle image as the West Point Mint is expected to do.
These 2020-S 1 oz Proof American Silver Eagles are perfect specimens with a PF70 grade. Coins in this condition showcase full, original mint luster and present with no detracting flaws. Please note that varied labels are possible, though not guaranteed with your purchase. If you buy more than one, please keep in mind you could get coins with matching additional labels.
