After a lackluster start to sales in 2020, the American Silver Eagle saw its demand skyrocket almost overnight in March 2020. This coincided with a broader spread through Western nations of the coronavirus. As the pandemic began to shock stock markets around the globe, investors quickly turned to gold and silver bullion to protect their wealth.
The West Point Mint announced a total sellout of on-hand 2020 American Silver Eagles in mid-March as the pandemic set in. From there, it was forced to reduce staffing while trying to produce more coins to meet that demand and eventually undergo a seven-day closure. Between April 8th and April 20th, the Philadelphia Mint provided emergency coining capacity to produce 240,000 2020 American Silver Eagles.
Walking Liberty continues to feature on the obverse of the 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coin. Designed in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, the image of Liberty featured here is a left-profile depiction of Liberty walking toward the sun on the horizon.
The heraldic eagle of the United States is found on the reverse side of 2020 (P) 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins. This national emblem features an American bald eagle with the US national shield on its chest, the arrows of war in one talon, and an olive branch in the other talon.
These 2020 (P) 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins are near-perfect specimens. The PCGS issues a Mint State 69 certification to coins with full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Those flaws have to be located outside the primary focal points and are limited in nature to minuscule contact marks or hairlines. First Strike labels identify these coins as specimens that arrived for grading within 30 days of release from the US Mint.
