There are few bullion coins as widely recognized as the American Silver Eagle. For decades, it has been a trusted option among investors in North America and has steadily drawn interest from buyers around the world. Demand for American Silver Eagles rose sharply in 2020 as the global pandemic disrupted financial markets, creating the need for expanded production capacity in April of that year. To help meet investor demand, the United States Mint called on the Philadelphia Mint to assist with coining American Silver Eagles. Global markets faced significant pressure in March 2020 as the pandemic unsettled stock exchanges and drove asset values lower. As uncertainty spread, investors turned in large numbers to precious metals such as gold and silver. In the United States, the West Point Mint quickly sold out of its available 2020 Silver Eagle inventory. Efforts to increase production were complicated by workforce reductions and a temporary seven-day shutdown implemented to safeguard employees. To support continued availability, the Philadelphia Mint contributed to production, ultimately striking 240,000 2020 American Silver Eagle coins as part of a special emergency issue.

All 2020 (P) 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins available here come in plastic slabs with an NGC label that includes the designation, Emergency Production. These Mint State 69 coins have full, original mint luster and no more than two minor detractions. Examples of these flaws include minuscule contact marks or hairlines that must be outside the primary focal points.

The obverse of the 2020 (P) American Silver Eagle features Adolph A. Weinman’s well-known Walking Liberty design. The image shows Liberty striding confidently toward the rising sun, symbolizing progress and optimism for the future. 

On the reverse of the 2020 (P) 1 oz Silver Eagle Coin, John Mercanti’s interpretation of the United States heraldic eagle appears, showcasing a shielded eagle grasping an olive branch and arrows as the central design element.
