A gifted scholar and athlete, James Naismith invented basketball in 1891 and then went on the earn his M.D in 1898 from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Despite his medical career, Naismith still managed to coach basketball at the University of Kansas until 1908. Naismith’s sports contributions aren’t limited to basketball, either. While playing for the YMCA team in 1891, he invented the world’s first football helmet.
