The Great Britain Sovereign was introduced in 1817 following the Great Recoinage Act of 1816. The reign of King George III saw the introduction of the Great Britain Sovereign and late in his reign in 1820, a Great Britain Gold Double Sovereign was issued. That gold coin, however, wouldn’t go into full production until 67 years later. Now, the 2020 Great Britain Gold Double Sovereign Coin is available to you for purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
During the final months of the reign of King George III, the first Gold Double Sovereign coin was issued. However, the decision was made to not release the coins for circulation use. The coin never entered circulating until 1887 during the Golden Jubilee celebration for Queen Victoria. Now, the Royal Mint of England has revived the coin for the 200th anniversary of the sovereign’s first release into circulation.
On the obverse of the 2020 Great Britain Gold Double Sovereign is the fifth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This right-profile depiction of Her Majesty was created in July 2015 by Jody Clark and showcases the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. Containing a total of 1,333 diamonds, this crown is worn only for the State Opening of Parliament.
The reverse field of the 2020 Great Britain Gold Double Sovereign includes the classic 1817 design of St. George on horseback as he slays a dragon. This design was created in 1817 by Benedetto Pistrucci and has featured on the Gold Sovereign coins since that time.
Gold Sovereign coins were produced in 1817 by the Royal Mint, but at first were only available as pattern and proof coins. While the Gold Sovereign went into circulation in 1820, the Double Sovereign wouldn’t achieve that goal until 1887 and both were eventually suspended amidst World War I as the use of gold in currency was discouraged.
This is the first-ever release of the Great Britain Gold Double Sovereign in the bullion range. The 2020 Great Britain Gold Double Sovereign is available to you here in Brilliant Uncirculated condition with a protective flip.
