Construction on the Forbidden City palace complex started in Beijing in 1406 and was completed 600 years ago in 1420. In total, the complex covers more than 180 acres of land and consists of 980 individual buildings. The main palace building was the imperial palace and residence of the Emperor of China from the era of the Ming Dynasty in 1420 until the end of the Qing Dynasty in 1924.
