Disney coins have increased in popularity over the last few years as the designs have gotten more original. The New Zealand Mint is known for putting out some truly amazing Disney coins, including many that feature the iconic Mickey Mouse. One of the more recent Disney sets from the New Zealand Mint is the Mickey and Friends series.
On the obverse of each coin, you will find Ian Rank-Broadley’s depiction of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This famous image was created in 1998 to serve as the fourth-generation image of the Queen to be used on all commonwealth coins. She is shown in right-profile wearing a crown atop her head. Engravings on this side of the coin include “Elizabeth II,” “Niue,” “250 Dollars,” and “2020.”
The reverse side of each coin features the image of Mickey Mouse with his arms wrapped around his pal Pluto’s neck in a big hug. Both of these Disney favorites are grinning from ear to ear. Engravings on this face of the coin include the purity, metal weight, and the Disney copyright.
The New Zealand Mint opened in 1967 in Auckland, New Zealand. This private mint is known for striking some of the best commemorative coins on the market. It is also the only mint in New Zealand that works with precious metals. However, the mint is not associated with the government of New Zealand. The New Zealand Mint is also responsible for producing coinage for many nearby island nations, including Niue, Fiji, and the Cook Islands.
