The obverse imagery on each round features a large dragon called Fafnir, whose body wraps up one side of the round where it seemingly vanishes. His claws and tongue are both visible in the image. You will also see “Fafnir” written on obverse of the rounds.
On the reverse side of the rounds, Fafnir’s lower body picks up where it left off, wrapping around the iconic image of the Bicephalous Eagle. Fafnir’s body makes an infinity symbol-like shape around the eagle, who is found on many Germania Mint rounds. The two-headed eagle is the Roman mythological symbol for Janus. In Roman mythology, Janus is the guardian of doors, bridges, gates, and passageways. He is also the god of all origins. The two heads each face different directions, symbolizing both the past and future. The phrase “Germania 2020” is visible on the reverse of the rounds, along with “5 Marks.”
One round features the designs in black, while the other is in a brilliant silver ruthenium plating. The backgrounds of each are a coppery color.
