One of the many miracles associated with the ministry of Jesus Christ was the resurrection of Lazarus. Recounted in the Gospel of John, chapter 11, verses 1 through 44, it is said that Jesus raised Lazarus of Bethany from the dead after his body had been entombed for four days. The Gospel of John states that the resurrection of Lazarus takes place in a town known in the biblical era as Bethany, what is today the Palestinian town of Al-Eizariya. The Palestinian word for the city translates to English as “the place of Lazarus.” John states that this is the final miracle performed by Jesus.
One could look at the story of this miracle as foreshadowing for Jesus’ own future. This is the last miracle he performs before the passion and crucifixion of Christ, and later his own resurrection.
Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse field of the 2020 2 oz Resurrection of Lazarus Biblical Silver Coins. This is the third-generation effigy of Her Majesty that was used on British coins from 1985 to 1997 and was designed by Raphael Maklouf. The right-profile portrait of the Queen was said, during its day, to be a depiction that did not capture her current age as closely as other busts of the Queen. This was the first Royal Mint effigy showing the Queen with earrings and a necklace.
Jesus is shown raising Lazarus from the dead in the reverse design of 2020 Resurrection of Lazarus Biblical Silver Coins. To prove to the people that Jesus came to Earth as the son of God, the stone is moved away from the tomb of Lazarus and Jesus looks toward the heavens and says “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” Jesus then called for Lazarus to “come forth,” and he emerged from his tomb, alive.
These 2020 2 oz Resurrection of Lazarus Biblical Silver Coins are housed inside of Bible-inspired display boxes with an included Certificate of Authenticity. The coins have laser-etched serial numbers on the edges with antique polish applied to the rimless blanks.
