The term allegory refers to a literary device used in narratives to represent a real-world issue, group of people, or broader culture with a singular symbol. In Western cultures, female allegories are used to represent nations. The Allegories Series from the Germania Mint launched in 2019 with a Germania-Britannia design and continued with a Germania-Columbia design, the latter representing the United States of America. Now, for the third release, Germania and Italia combine for the first design of 2020.
On the obverse side of 2020 10 oz Germania The Allegories Italia & Germania Silver Rounds is a depiction of Italia alongside Germania. The image shows Italia on the left of the design field leaning against a pedestal that holds a Horn of Plenty on its base. Italia wears a mural crown on her head and is looking toward Germania on the right. The figure of Germania in this design stands nearby with her right hand on the shoulder of Italia as a sign of friendship between the two women.
The reverse face of 2020 10 oz Germania The Allegories Italia & Germania Silver Rounds features the coat of arms for the Germania Mint. The crowned shield is quartered with four historic symbols from European heraldry. The first quadrant shows the double-headed eagle, with a checkered pattern in the second quadrant and a ribbon with flowers in the third quadrant. In the fourth quadrant is a wild boar.
