The seventh release of the Proof Native American Silver Dollar Series represents the state of North Carolina and the historic Tuscarora people who once inhabited this region. The Tuscarora people were originally from the region of modern-day New York, USA, and the province of Ontario, Canada. By the 17th century, the Tuscarora had migrated south to a region known at the time as Eastern Carolina. After the American Revolution, the Tuscarora eventually migrated back north and became members of the historic Iroquois Confederacy in New York and Ontario.
A depiction of a member of the Tuscarora tribe is featured in the portrait on the obverse side of 2020 1 oz Proof North Carolina Opossum Silver Coins. The image captures a member of the tribe. The only federally-recognized tribes of Tuscarora people in the United States and Canada now live in New York and Ontario. A small group of people living in North Carolina to this day maintains ancestry from the Tuscarora people, though are not federally recognized by the US government.
The image of an opossum is found on the reverse face of 2020 Proof North Carolina Tuscarora Opossum Silver Coins. The opossum is a species of marsupials that is endemic to the Americas and actually originated in South America. Opossums made the move into North America during the Great American Interchange that saw water levels recede in the Cenozoic to establish a land connection between South America and North America.
