The HMS Bounty was launched in Hull, Yorkshire, England, from the Blaydes shipyard. The ship was constructed in 1784 as a collier, or bulk cargo ship, and its name was originally Bethia. The ship was intended for private merchant service after it was built and saw three years of private service before 1787. In May 1787, the Royal Navy purchased the ship for the equivalent of 209,000 Pound sterling when adjusted to 2016 levels. The ship was refitted, renamed the HMS Bounty, and equipped with defensive weapons in the form of four 4-pound cannons and 10 swivel guns.
The obverse side of the 2020 1 oz Cook Islands Bounty Gold Coin features a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief. The fourth-generation release from the Royal Mint of England, the design is used throughout the Commonwealth nations to this day and depicts the Queen wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Ian Rank-Broadley created this effigy for the Royal Mint in 1998.
On the reverse side of 2020 Cook Islands Bounty Gold Coins, you will find an image of the HMS Bounty. The three-mast ship was fully-rigged and had a displacement of 215 tons. The ship was purchased by the Royal Navy for use in a botanical mission to the South Pacific to bring back breadfruit plants. The idea was to determine whether or not the breadfruit plant could grow in the West Indies.
