In 2020, the Royal Australian Mint introduced a collection known as the Australia Zoo Series. These coins feature images of famous species housed by the Australia Zoo in Queensland, Australia. The Sumatran tiger is the smallest surviving tiger subspecies. It has a distinctive dark, dense striped coat with a lighter underside and narrow stripes that are closer together than other tiger subspecies. Adults can reach up to 8 feet in length and weigh up to 310 pounds, with males being larger than females. They have powerful jaws and sharp canine teeth designed for tearing apart their prey.
Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of the 2020 Australian Silver Sumatran Tiger Coin. Her Late Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief in a 2015 design from Jody Clark. This effigy depicts the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. This was the final portrait of Elizabeth II during her reign.
A Sumatran tiger is depicted in the reverse design of 2020 1 oz Silver Australia Zoo Sumatran Tiger Coins. Sumatran tigers are solitary and territorial animals, with males and females only coming together to mate. They are excellent swimmers and can swim long distances across rivers and even marine environments. This design captures a Sumatran Tiger in the midst of a shallow waters.
