The Mexican Mint introduced its Proof Mexican Silver Libertad coins in 1983 with a special strike of a 1 oz silver coin. After two years out of production, the series launched as an annual collection in 1986 with the 1 oz silver coin the only option through 1991. Starting in 1992, the fractional-ounce coins were available in 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz silver. Later additions included the 2 oz and 5 oz silver coins starting in 1996.

The Winged Victory design first appeared on the 50 peso gold Centenario from 1921 to the 1970s, and it was later revived for the Mexican Gold and Silver Libertad coin collections in the 1980s.
The reverse face of 2020 Proof Mexican Silver Libertad fractional-ounce coins features the modern coat of arms for the nation. This seal includes a Mexican golden eagle with a serpent locked in its beak and claws while it stands on a cactus arm. A cactus wreath frames it below and the Spanish-language inscription of the nation’s name is featured above.
